Synopsis: The Night Service, Callie's Story,
By Harriet Kass
The Night Service, Callie's Story is a bold, emotionally charged narrative featuring amatory themes, and the acceptance of polyamory.
Callie Bennet, a recent university graduate, feels overwhelmed by student debt. Despite her university degree, she can only find employment at a downtown coffee shop, serving lattes to strangers whom she nicknames. These include Older Hot Guy and Illegal Parker, a rude man she eventually dumps coffee on.
The book begins with Callie completing an employment application that asks her to declare her comfort with various sexual activities. Callie is applying to join The Night Service, an exclusive escort agency serving high-net-worth clients. She is introduced to The Night Service by her friend Annie, who had been working for them throughout her university years. The work is transactional, disguised as a luxurious modelling firm, and provides her with a way to clear her student debt quickly. As she waits for her interview, she meets Damian, who becomes a key character.
Her first appointment as an escort is with Edward Kline, the CEO of a powerful investment company. Edward is a gentleman who wants to project the image of himself as a sugar daddy without the relationship. He therefore orders appointments through The Night Service. Although his objective is sex, he ensures Callie is comfortable and even gives her a costly gift to commemorate her first appointment.
The money starts to accumulate as Callie goes on several more appointments. But she realizes that the interactions are all one-sided, and she begins to worry if sex will be ruined for her.
She befriends the Night Service colleague, Damian, who shares her concern that sex was no longer a pleasure but a task. During a customer appreciation night (a sex party at a club), where Damian and Callie are acting as host and hostess (with no expectations they would have sex with the customers), they discover they have a connection that is not only satisfying but addictive and agree to be “Fuck Buddies”.
But everything shifts when Callie’s interactions with Ryan evolve. He is a regular at the coffee shop, whom she had nicknamed Older Hot Guy. He is a successful lawyer and seemingly out of her league. Their relationship starts with casual flirting at the coffee shop. But before it can go deeper, Ryan discovers Callie’s night employment. Being deprived of physical contact for years, while mourning the loss of his wife, his colleagues arranged an interaction for him through The Night Service. Callie is the one sent to fulfill the appointment, and they are both mortified when Ryan discovers her second employment. Ryan quickly cancels the appointment to release her from the obligation, but also unintentionally insults Callie, who runs out on him.
After the encounter with Ryan, Callie is consoled by Damian at her apartment. While they are talking, Callie discovers Damian was injured by one of his clients. She cares for his injury, and they also share another passionate moment.
While Callie’s journey unfolds, her friend Annie reveals the darker side of the business. She turns to substance abuse to cope with the appointments, which are far more extreme than Callie’s experiences. Annie is paired with Ryan as a date for an Art Show. Ryan has no intention of a physical encounter that night, he only needed the date for the event. Callie is also working the Art Show on a Night Service assignment as a visually appealing server for the event. When Ryan sees her at the gallery, he tries to speak to her, but Callie angrily rushes away, still hurt from his actions the night before. At the end of the night, Ryan is urgently searching for Callie, as Annie has overdosed and is passed out in the ladies’ room. With Ryan’s and Damian’s help, Callie takes Annie to the hospital. Callie tries to blame Ryan for Annie’s overdose, but quickly realizes that, although she's angry at him for what happened during their appointment, he couldn’t be blamed for Annie’s condition. Before Ryan leaves, he hands his business card to Damian, inviting him to reach out if Annie needs anything.
Damian decides to use Ryan to resolve a personal legal matter. Damian was sued for wrongful death, a litigation that he lost, and now owes two million dollars. The debt is the reason why he became an escort. He contacts Ryan, asking if he would file an appeal. Once Ryan realizes the case's complexity, he agrees to help.
As Ryan grapples with the realization that someone he desires is involved in a distasteful profession, Callie tries to distance herself from him for his sake. However, their paths keep crossing, and one night it happens, leaving Ryan witnessing his nightmare and biggest desire in the same moment. Ryan is sent to a party for a client, Edward Kline. The party has an erotic theme, which includes hiring Callie and Damian to put on a live sex show for the guests. Instead of scaring Ryan away, this not only makes Ryan want Callie more but also makes him question what else he finds arousing as he starts to develop a confusing attraction to Damian.
Ryan keeps working on Damian’s appeal, and his feelings for him intensify. He tries to suppress these emotions and focus on Callie instead. Raised with traditional beliefs that shape his view of attractiveness, he tries to ignore his growing attraction to Damian. He also wrestles with moral conflict about pursuing a relationship with Callie, and the date he was looking forward to with her ends with him rejecting Callie's invitation to be intimate, leaving her confused and upset.
Callie is left disappointed by Ryan’s rejection, and shortly after that night, she is requested to fulfill an escort appointment with a powerful VIP client whom Annie usually services. The client assaults Callie. The experience shatters her sense of safety and control, leaving her bruised physically and emotionally broken. She withdraws from The Night Service and from her life. But Ryan and Damian are there to help her. They partner to help her heal, and Ryan and Callie’s relationship reestablishes. Ryan comes to her rescue with his money, enabling her to receive medical care, pay off her debts, and secure new employment at his legal firm. She starts to develop deep feelings for him.
Their love story unfolds in the aftermath of the assault, but as Callie starts to feel safe again, a devastating truth surfaces. It is discovered that the man who assaulted her is Ryan’s father, Lawrence Grant. Lawrence, as one of the named partners at the law firm, threatens to withhold Ryan’s promotion at work if Callie reveals him as the assailant. He sends Ryan on business trips around the world to purposely keep them apart. Devastated that Ryan followed his father’s direction, Callie turns to Damian for comfort. Their relationship evolves, leaving Callie wondering whom she truly desires. Damian, who seemed to have been emotionally unavailable in the past, confesses feelings for her, and their physical interactions become intimate and passionate.
Callie receives a phone call from her father. Her mother is in the hospital and has suffered a stroke. As her father has an emotional breakdown, Callie is left alone to deal with the decision to take her mother off life support. Just as the difficult decision needs to be made, Ryan returns from his travels to be by her side. He helps her again through another devastating life event. Still, after the funeral, they need to face the reality of their broken relationship and what Callie did with Damian while Ryan was away.
They spend a week at a remote cabin, and discuss the pain and hurt they have caused each other. They reconcile, and their week away ends with passion and love. Callie also discovers that Ryan can fulfill her lustful desires as well as her intimate ones.
When they return to the city, Ryan decides it’s time to make Lawrence answer for his sins. They confront Lawrence and force him to retire, give Ryan his promotion, and divorce Ryan’s mother without protest.
Before the book concludes, Damian visits Callie to understand where their relationship now stands. Alone in her apartment, he tries to seduce her. She uses every ounce of self-control to reject him. But as she tells him to stop, Ryan witnesses their interaction. He is aroused again by the idea of Callie and Damian together, and encourages them to continue so he can watch. Damian and Callie resume their interaction, but then invite Ryan to join them. The engagement moves to the bedroom, where all three of them explore new limits. The story ends with a very erotic threesome and Ryan giving in to his attraction to Damian while he welcomes Damian’s physical advancement.
This is the first book in a series of three which celebrates sex-positivity, non-monogamy, and emotional growth, inviting readers to challenge taboos and embrace authentic pleasure.
